Wedging
Clay is kneaded into the perfect consistency. It can’t be too wet or dry.
The process
Throwing
Most pieces are thrown on the wheel, and some are handbuilt. This forms the basic shape of the piece.
Trimming
Each piece is trimmed precisely to its final shape. Any handles or special features are added at this stage.
Bisque Firing
After drying for at least a week, each piece is smoothed and perfected. It is then fired to 1000 degrees celcius in a bisque firing.
Glazing
The pieces are now removed from the kiln in their permanent state. The clay can no longer be recycled or change forms. Each piece is washed and dried, then dipped in glaze.
Glaze Firing
The final step in the long ceramics process is glaze firing. The pieces are now fired to 1220 degrees celcius. This firing takes 2 days in total. Once the kiln is opened, the pots come out in their finished state. All they need now is a quick sand of the base and they are complete.
